Spiderman Venom Cake

My son this year requested a spiderman cake for his birthday. I did some brainstorming I wanted to do something a little different than a basic spiderman cake. I know he likes all the comic book heroes and villians (we share a comic book nerd side) so decided to make a Venom cake. I figured Carnage was a bit gruesome for a 7 year old birthday party...maybe next year! It was so much fun to make! So here is Ben's Venom cake...

Hello Kitty Cake

For my mum's birthday, I wasn't quite sure what kind of theme to make her birthday cake. I wanted to make it really fun and something she would love. My mum used to be a nurse but took a brief break to open a shop that sold Hello Kitty before it got to be really big and wasn't just sold at Sanrio stores anymore. I have loved Hello Kitty ever since I was 4 and we first went on a vacation to Florida. Imagine a fat kid in a candy store for the first time....I was a hyper child anyway so I have no idea how my parents tolerated me. Hello Kitty been a mutual love of ours for years since so I decided that was the cake to make my mum. Instead of using the trademark red that Hello Kitty is always seen in I decided to make her a little more summery as my mum's Birthday is in July. I decided to use yellow, white and pink fondant. Admittedly, as cute as Hello Kitty is...her head isn't the easiest shape to make...I am really happy with how she turned out though.

Baby Shower Cake

My friends decided to throw out other friend a baby shower. So as a contribution I offered to make a baby shower cake. This will be Christina's first baby and she's having a girl so I wanted to make a somewhat girlie cake but one that still made Christina the centre of attention...for now. I made a little mini Christina perched on the edge of a cake surrounded with some flowers in some very girlie colours. It turned out to be a hit and Christina loved her cake.

Jem and the Holograms Cake

So sorry it's been a while since I updated this...too long in fact. Life kind of got in the way however, the cakes were still being made. My best friend requested a while ago that instead of buying her a birthday present could I make her a cake. I agreed forgetting completely that her main loves in life aren't so simple to emulate in cake. She decided she wanted a cake of her favourite T.V. show from when she was a kid. I got to go very girlie with this cake as her favourite show is non other than Jem and the Holograms. Based on the fact that it is now 2012 and not 1985 I kind of made them how they would be now if they decided to reform (in the animated world)...chubby with not as big hair....which we both had a good laugh at. It was a lot of fun to make and I resisted the urge to completely paint their faces with sparkly food colouring. I did love the fact that I got to make them standing on top of a bright pink keytar...oh the joys of girlie cakes!

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year.

I LOVE Christmas and last year started kind of a little tradition whereby me and my little monster go to stay at my Parent's house on Christmas Eve. This started because it's just me and my son for Christmas in our house and it's just my parents in their house. My parents are great and have been a big help to me and my son. They're constantly pushing and supporting both of us. So last year I thought it would be great to have them there for Christmas morning when Santa's been. Oh does my son love it! It's so much more exciting too.

Last year I did Christmas dinner at my house so this year my mum and dad decided to do it. I volunteered for dessert. I have to admit I overwhelmed myself with options and ended up totally stumped on what to do. Then I had an idea as I finished the Nativity cake...I would make inidividual cakes. So on Christmas Eve I quickly russled up 4 individual cakes with a penguin theme. They went down a treat and my monster got a real kick out of all the different penguin scenes.

Here's our little wintery cakes....

Christmas Time

What better way to celebrate Christmas than with some cake!
I was asked to make a nativity cake showing Jesus' birth. I decided that instead of doing the stable etc I would do some of the figures who were involved in what happened that night. So most importantly we have Jesus, Mary and Joesph. Then I added the Angel who foretold the birth to the shepherds )which are symbolised with a sheep). I figured if I did the shepherds there would do zero room on the cake! I also put on the three wise men each bearing their gift. Lastly I put the star which the wise men followed that shone over the stable.
I wanted to find a way to show the star where it was meant to be...hello springy wire. I actually think it finished off the cake nicely as I have all the figures looking up at the star...and also the people eating the cake!

So here's my Nativity cake...
