Hello Kitty Cake
For my mum's birthday, I wasn't quite sure what kind of theme to make her birthday cake. I wanted to make it really fun and something she would love.
My mum used to be a nurse but took a brief break to open a shop that sold Hello Kitty before it got to be really big and wasn't just sold at Sanrio stores anymore. I have loved Hello Kitty ever since I was 4 and we first went on a vacation to Florida. Imagine a fat kid in a candy store for the first time....I was a hyper child anyway so I have no idea how my parents tolerated me. Hello Kitty been a mutual love of ours for years since so I decided that was the cake to make my mum.
Instead of using the trademark red that Hello Kitty is always seen in I decided to make her a little more summery as my mum's Birthday is in July. I decided to use yellow, white and pink fondant. Admittedly, as cute as Hello Kitty is...her head isn't the easiest shape to make...I am really happy with how she turned out though.
Baby Shower Cake
My friends decided to throw out other friend a baby shower. So as a contribution I offered to make a baby shower cake. This will be Christina's first baby and she's having a girl so I wanted to make a somewhat girlie cake but one that still made Christina the centre of attention...for now. I made a little mini Christina perched on the edge of a cake surrounded with some flowers in some very girlie colours.
It turned out to be a hit and Christina loved her cake.
Jem and the Holograms Cake
So sorry it's been a while since I updated this...too long in fact. Life kind of got in the way however, the cakes were still being made.
My best friend requested a while ago that instead of buying her a birthday present could I make her a cake. I agreed forgetting completely that her main loves in life aren't so simple to emulate in cake. She decided she wanted a cake of her favourite T.V. show from when she was a kid. I got to go very girlie with this cake as her favourite show is non other than Jem and the Holograms.
Based on the fact that it is now 2012 and not 1985 I kind of made them how they would be now if they decided to reform (in the animated world)...chubby with not as big hair....which we both had a good laugh at.
It was a lot of fun to make and I resisted the urge to completely paint their faces with sparkly food colouring. I did love the fact that I got to make them standing on top of a bright pink keytar...oh the joys of girlie cakes!
