How To Get To Sesame Street

Today is my friend's son's birthday so he'll be a mighty two years old. He is one of the most adorable little boys I have ever seen. On saturday he had a Sesame Street themed birthday which was super cute. As me and my monster were leaving we told Morgan that we had just one more surprise for him on his birthday.

The surprise is this elmo cake...

This cake was just so much fun to make. I have to admit it was hard to part with it! It was a really hard decision whether to make an elmo cake or a cookie monster cake...maybe I'll do cookie monster for me!

Blow Out The Candles

On Sunday it was my dad's birthday. So as I was still basking in the glow of my son's cake turning out ok I decided to make my dad a cake.
A few years ago (more than my dad would like to remember) my mum got my dad a cake made which featured him whizzing down a road in his yellow convertible. We all loved the cake and so did my dad. Since we, as adults, don't normally go all out on our cakes I thought I'd make him one to celebrate.

I wanted something which captured my dad. So I ended up with him sleeping in an airchair complete with his evening bagel, cup of tea, iphone...and even some wine gums for good measure! I wanted to find a way to put his age on the cake without putting it in a glaring way....so in comes the newspaper. I even added a little tribute to the best granda ever from my son Ben and my nephew Caleb.

Ben 10 Cake

Just to show the cake that started it all and a couple of the details. Here is my son's Ben 10 birthday cake.
Since my son turned 6 and is luckily called Ben I changed the logo to say Ben 6
I picked a couple of his favourite characters called Heatblast and Echo Echo (He's actually my favourite) to make and put on the cake with a miniture Ben 10.

The Cake...TA DA!

Let Them Eat Cake!

So here I am taking a new little road in my life. First it was the cards which started many years ago...then the art...and the paper poppies which I seem to now be synonomus with. So from Lucky 7 Designs has sprouted Lucky 7 Cakes (see what I did there with the name...gold star coming my way!)

So how did my new path begin?...well let me tell you...

My little monster, Ben's birthday was coming up and he is really into (and I mean like all encompassing awe) this superhero called Ben 10. It's probably more the fact that the little boy is called Ben but he loves it. The problem is that Ben 10 hasn't really taken off as much here in Canada as it has in the UK and therefore finding Ben 10 stuff is a bit of a problem. So as you can imagine when my monster looked at me with his big blue eyes and asked for a Ben 10 cake my thought was 'oh crap'.

Last year we forked out the $40 for the store bought blue, purple and grey batman cake...all to get the toy on top...which broke 2 hours later. This year I was determined not to do this and I would, come hell or high water, make this cake.

We've all watched the shows...Cake Boss, Ace of Cakes, Cake Walk etc etc and marvelled at the masterful creations made out of fondant and modelling chocolate. We've all sat and thought that looks easy and we could totally do that....yeah...it's really not that easy. After my first cake is never to be spoken of again I eventually ended up with my son's birthday cake.

So...this is the cake...
